Street Food Party
Like in other countries around the Mediterranean and the Middle East, street food is an integral part of Israeli cuisine. Unlike street food in USA and Western Europe that is usually associated with "fast food", meaning grab something to fill up your stomach, Israeli fast food is full of tastes, fresh ingredients and even healthy. American fast food chains had hard time to establish their base in Israel. In case of McDonalds they had to change their menu to adjust to the local taste. Starbucks and Dunkin' Donuts didn't make it at all. In addition Israeli fast food is a real paradise for vegetarians and vegans. Dishes like hummus, falafel and sabich contain no meat at all, but on the other hand are full of important nutrients.
Following is a menu of some of the most common Israeli dishes you can find on the streets and market places of Jerusalem, Tel Aviv and other cities. Please take into account that some of the dishes need some preliminary preparations: falafel, hummus and hummus filling for Sambusak all require soaking chickpeas for at least 12 hrs. Amba sauce should be prepared a month in advance, since it takes time for it to reach the best taste. It can be kept in the fridge for at least 6 month. Malabi and tamarind juice should be refrigerated for several hours before serving, so you can prepare them a day before.
