Bhat
Bhat is the central ingredient of the dal bhat meal - the rice. In general there is nothing special about it. Use just plain Basmati or another long-grain rice and a little bit salt. The only purpose of the rice is to absorb all the other dishes of the dal bhat meal and to provide you with some carbohydrates.
Plan for twice as much rice as you usually do. Your guests will demand a refill.

Preparation

3 cups rice
pinch of salt
Put the rice in a strainer and wash for a while.
Transfer the rice to a bowl and soak in 6 cups of water for 15-30 mins.
Transfer the rice and the water to a pot, add pinch of salt and bring to a boil over high heat.
When boiling, reduce the heat to low, cover tightly and cook for 20 mins. more.
Let rest covered in the pot for 10 mins.
